[EVA] DVD bitrates and "Holiday Edition" extras?

The animatics extras do not use the re-mastered video which Platinum does.
Not sure if the animatics in the Renewal R2 do.
The R1 animatics can be found on the standard case platinum release (& any
budget releases of those discs, which had less episodes per disc than the
thin case releases. Number of discs per set should give away which has the
"original" platinum discs. More discs = original , less = lite. Amazon/ebay
are your friends :)

Well I was thinking it over RJN, and really in terms of visual quality, if I
was obsessing over that I'd go with Renewal, or just wait a few years until
the inevitable Blu Ray re-release.
Logically, therefore, I should focus more on what particular English bonus
materials I'd like to hang onto; are those animatics in the "Holiday
Edition" exclusive to that release, or can they be found elsewhere? I was
just confused to hear that some reviewers didn't like the bitrate on those.
Its encouraging that ANNcast said that the Renewal remaster was actually
*in* hi-definition, which means they'll be easier to transfer to Blu Ray --
that is, compared to a complete, from the ground up remastering.
Frankly I'm more concerned about finally getting a good remastering of End
of Eva, because that had movie-quality animation.
I personally never lauded the original series for its "animation quality" --
in the sense of fluid motion, it was always kind of skippy and shoestring
budget (i.e. Shinji's magic hands in episode 9 ), so I'm probably just
over-thinking this.
I do pause to wonder at what the inevitable Blu-Ray release will be like; I
mean the experience of it. "Yet another DVD re-release" kind of lost its
impact over time, but pretty much every fan of the show will dip again to
buy it on a completely new format. That'll be quite a lot of buzz.

I found some of the VA commentaries..ahem..entertaining. But why use Allison
Keith=Misato commentating on an Asuka-centyric episode, rather that "Those
Women Longed For.." which was Misato's special episode. Or the earlier giant
robot episode that demonstrated her personal bravery. You get the point(?)
Extras with the Greenfield & McCoy discussions. I watched one, & that was
enough.
Holiday Edition uses the Test Type 00 cover. Unfortunately the "Holiday
Edition" band is part of ADV's print, so spoiling. BTW have you considered
the thin cased Platinum set in a tin? I think that was the penultimate
release.

<snip>
I thought the commentaries from the voicer cast were entertaining. The
booklets packed in are nice as well. And - while of minimal relative value -
the packaging is very pretty. (I still need to pick up the last volume from
that set, though. Should probably hustle on that...) My impression is that
the 'holiday edition' is just a physical repackage of the thick-packed
version's disks, minus the booklets and larger-format packaging elements.
But I haven't directly compared the two releases first-hand. It's also been
a couple of years since I've watched them.
