It's there somewhere. Possibly, the Director's Cut episodes. I don't remember where (here we go again with that, I know) but there's a flashback where Gendou specifically says "if it's a boy we'll call him Shinji, if it's a girl, Rei". Either the DC, or 25-26, not any earlier.
