I think you're right about Anno's fantasy, but Gendou is different.  He 
slept w/ Ritsuko too, hadn't he, so that should make it a square. And it
isn't really a love triangle between them, at least I don't think, since
Gendou only tricked those women, Ritsuko and Naoko to do things for him.
The fact that he married Yui is the first place and taking her last name
clearly shows his ambition.

The combination of 1 guy and 2 girls are everyone in anime!!  Anyone knows
the author of "Touch" (^_^)?  People like to see that combination.
