[EVA] Gainax, Eva, Nadia and Orphans

Well, I just got my greasy little fingers on Nadia episodes 1-12. (Anyone 
who spoils me on later episodes dies.) Anyway, I'd like to see if anyone
else has seen the series, and would appreciate me elaborating. But for
now, a throwaway observation. 

Gainax seems to have an obsession with the losing of parents. It's hard to
think of a character in either of the series that hasn't lost at least one
parent. Indeed, several of the main characters have esentially been
abandoned by their parents (Shinji, Jean), or never knew them (Rei,
Nadia). 

I find these repeated themes interesting. Does anyone else?
