Guys,  Here is the deal.

If you look in later episodes you should notice that when they do a pan of Tokyo-3 there is a building that is VERY reflective.  That is the "mirror" that shinji sees.   THe Eva's eye was damaged NOT SHINJI!, but the eva unit regenerated the eye.  What shinji saw can be duplicated by takeing a video camera conecting it to a TV, turning the tv on and pointing the camera at the TV.  You get that sort of infinate space affect.  (Oops went too far on the tangent!)  I hope this helps!
