Actually, it's probably 1 day before the first episode (22 days before the
events in ep 5.)

A good point.

One thing to mention is that the Evas do have their own minds (oe souls,
Ritsuko mentioned one or the other.) So perhaps, without a "Soul Buffer",
Rei is forced to deal with 00 directly.
