I think this is true to live action movies as well.  Casters try to
cast the most beautiful women they can afford...probably for the sex
appeal that will draw that many more viewers which translates to that
much more money.  Entertainment is a money making business, they're
looking for any way to increase their revenues.  That means ordinary
women and men don't necessarily fit into their scheme for raking in
the cash.

I can think of Wings of Honneamise as one anime that has an "average"
looking female, in fact I think just about everyone in that movie is
ordinary.  But it is an out of ordinary anime movie itself, wanting to
show that ordinary men are the ones who achieve extraordinary goals.
