How's this for a reason.

Rei:  Moody disposition.  Incapable of social interaction.
Asuka:  Conceited, loud, and vain.  Also has some deep-rooted psychological
problems.
Misato:  Too obsessed with destroying Angels.  Also has problems dealing
with guys who remind her of her father.
Ritsuko:  Underhanded.

Maya:  Nice, bland personality.  Minor role in series revealed no major
mental disorders.  Plus, I like her voice, and she's not underage.
