But Misato refers to Ritsuko thinking she's disgusting (21, the end.) In
## In EOE, Shinji was forced to confront the action between Misato and
## Kaji. And he thinks it's disgusting too, but then Asuka counteracts
## by saying "When I grow up, I might want to do that".
Eva, sex is not a method of procreation, nor an act of love, but of
bestial coupling.
## I think it's deeper than that. I don't feel that sex is presented
## as just animal lust thing, at least not in the western sense where
## you just pick up somebody in the pub and "do it". Those who engage
## in sex certainly have feeling towards each other, as well as all
## the jealousy that comes with it. I think sex in EVA is presented
## as one big issue you have to face in life, starting from menstruation
## and masturbation when you come of age. For human, sex is not just
## bestial, and I think EVA covers more aspects of sex than the
## bestial part.
When you see Naoko and Gendou kissing in 21, it's not a reflection of
love, it's animal lust.
## This is arguable. Perhaps at that moment, there is spontaneity in
## the act in which surely lust played a part. However, I don't think
## Naoko treated the relationship lightly.
If you think about Ritsuko being inerrogated inb the nude, it's a form of
humiliation. In the movies, I believe the audience is meant to feel
revulsion at Shinji's masturbating at Asuka's bedside.
## Strangely, I didn't feel that. I was shocked at first, but that
## was because I was still treating Shinji as a kid and the anime as,
## well, yet another anime. But when I realised what happened (I didn't
## realize what happened when I watched D+R, perhaps because I couldn't
## believe what I had seen) when I watched EOE, I quickly came to
## sympathize with what he did. But that's just me. I am sure that
## many in the audience would feel disgusted by what Shinji did. As for
## me, I think his act is understandable. He asked for Asuka's help,
## He got her "help" in a warped way. At the end he acts like what he
## has always been: doing something which hurts nobody but himself.
The idea in Evangelion is in that world, sex is not used for love, but as
a way of releasing tensions.
## Surely it is one of the "uses" of sex. Yet it is just one of them,
## There are other aspects of sex covered in Evangelion. In fact,
## Evangelion itself could be said to be a big metaphor on sex.
## The LCL-filled cockpit can be interpreted as the embryo in womb.
## The retrieval of unborn Angel in the volcano can be viewed as
## some kind of abortion in action (the crack of volcano through
## which EVA-02 entered looks suspiciously like a female sex organ)
## At the beginning of EOE (oh.. spoiler again), on the signboard
## hanging on a lamp-post half sunk in water you can see very
## clearly the words "Obstetrics" and "Gynaecology" in Japanese.
## The reference to sex as part of the picture (or your life) is
## very obvious.
