Wrong, earth was never destroyed by the vogons, if you read the fourth
book, earth miraculously survived but there seems to be a rift in the
moemory of the earth itself (cheem, but Arthur Dent found it out when he
tried to probe it), everyone survived.

However i heard that earth is finally destroyed in the fifth book (mostly
harmless). everyone died. Sad.
