It's all a matter of perspective.

## Religion is not religion if it cannot command the fervent faith in their
## adherents. I can argue about theology or mythology within the context of
## religion, but I won't argue about whether a certain religion is true or
## worth believing. This is some wisdom I acquired over the years in contact
## with several religions.

(More on topic)

I seriously doubt that SEELE actually had a dead sea scroll. My gut
feeling is this is just another level of misdirection. (Marduk report,
anyone?)

## I must stress it again. (I said this before, but this question keeps
## popping up. I think FAQ-keeper really needs to take note here). The
## so-called "Dead Sea Scroll" used by SEELE is the *Secret* Dead Sea
## Scroll, which is supposed to be different from the real Daed Sea
## Scroll as we know it. None of the content of that "*Secret* Dead
## Sea Scroll" is ever made known in the anime. So there is a
## substantial possibility that that "*Secret* Dead Sea Scroll" is in
## fact a deliberate scam.

## The corollary is that any comparision of what happened in Evangelion
## with the real Dead Sea Scroll is bound to be misguided. Anno might
## have read about the Dead Sea Scroll before he wrote Evangelion, but
## I don't think he actually delved into the details in the scroll to
## draw inspiration for the events happened in Evangelion.
