>If one takes Eva from a 100% religious stand point most of the series makes
sense. Many people have told me that the religious parallels are just
coinsidence, but I dont think so. That would be too much of a cop out.
You have an interesting view on this. Let me add in my 2 cents:
Why is Evangelion religious? In fact, in what ways is Evangelion religious?
Well, it is concerned with the nature of humanity and happiness, for one. It
asks "the question". It has loads of Christian symbolism. It has Angels
(dead giveaway ^_^).
Why?
Because Anno is messed up? ^_^ Easy answer.
That trite reply might be more on the mark than you think. Take one Hideaki
Anno. He is depressed (notoriously so). He is probably wondering about the
meaning of life, reason for suffering...etc. What better way to make money,
get everyone thinking about those things and create cathartically that make EVA?
^_^
Really, speaking as one who has been REALLY depressed (serious, catatonic
depression, similar to Asuka's in the last few episodes) I think this is a
likely possibility (esp. if you're a creative type like I am ^_^). Anno put
in all this religious connotations to make people THINK. Like all the angst
in it. (EVA is also influenced by Arthur C. Clarke's "Childhood's End", BTW)
Human suffering, human happiness. Human creation, human nature. Artificial
gods, real gods. Gods and humans. Angels and humans. That's what EVA's about.
(Author gets off soapbox)
> The angels are being sent to earth by God because God has is fed up with
the secular age in which his "children" are living. He fears that they have
strayed too far from his teachings and that it is time to start over again.
(Kinda like the story of Noah)
Maybe.
> I think that the only reason that God keeps failing with his angels is the
fact that he is out smarted by the only one who could, The Messiah. After
some careful reading and watching of the series, it appears to me that
Gendou is the Messiah. (Being Jewish I can accept this because our Messiah
has not come yet) So you have the Messiah fighting against God because he
wants to keep the secular age intact.
GENDOU THE MESSIAH? :(:( HOW? I think he is a horrible, contempible wretch
who deserts both his wife and child. Some Messiah. Shinji is a more likely
candidate, or Rei.
I say : Shinji and Rei! Rei and Shinji! ^_^
> Each one of the angels that God sends down fails because they are fighting
the Messiah. As you notice each angel gets more and more complex and more
intelligent, all the way up to #17 Nagisa Kaworu.
If it's Shinji, I agree.
> Kaworu IS human, but is also an angel. That was God's mistake, making
Kaworu human. Kaworu is on earth with one and only one purpose: the 3rd
impact However a small problem occours, he falls in love with Shinji. (Or
humans can be inserted, the thing that he has been sent to destroy) Kaworu
is now torn between his love and loyality to his God and his love for human
beings and Shinji. So he does the only intelligent thing, he kills himself
so he does not have to decide between God and human kind.
Interesting. Want to read my "Touched by an Angel"? Sorta like your theory.
> Is this screwy or what??? :) This whole mess was created during a
11:00PM-4:00AM drive from St. Louis to Chicago with two other friends. Now
I could be completly wrong with this, but this is ,as I said before, a
theory. I think that Anno would be proud of me. :) After he created Eva to
get the fans to think. Ok I will get down off my soap box now. Please
tell me what you think, and if you decide to spam this please send them to
MY e-mail address, we get enough junk mail from this Mailing list as is.
All fan conjecture is ultimately conjecture. The truth, such as it is, is
locked inside the unknowable Hideaki Anno, and will never be revealed. (EVEN
in the RCB ^_^)
But EVA has made us think. That is enough.
And may the forces of the universe have mercy on his soul and ours. (I'm an
agnostic, sorry ^_^)

I am myself. This object is I. The figure that forms me."
When someone stands in the light but does not give it out, a shadow is created.
The ways of nature and of life are strange and deep. They are not to be
understood. In the midst of angers and of wars love's secret work goes on,
and binds us all by blood, and this, whether love is denied or bestowed. -
