Well, to the best of my knowledge, the basic pattern for the Evangelions was
the first angel.  Their appearance, however, I am lead to believe was
patterned after what the ancient church in the dark ages decided that some of
the different demons in Hell looked like.  AKA they took the machinery and
then crafted the visage of the Evas to look like these assumed beings.
