You see, though, Gendou isn't really a villain in the classic definition.
Certainly, he is an antagonist... in that Shinji can't get along with him/
disagrees with him / doesn't like him... take your pick, but as a human
being, he has a madness to his method (pun intended)...

He has a goal, and nothing will stop it.  The goal involves his son and
wife... and I believe they're one in the same... but I won't spoil it
here, so no more details :)

But, I think he truly believes what he's doing is good for Shinji, Yui,
and ultimately, humankind......
