how about this.  I don't think there's much to justify.  It's pretty clear
he knew just what was going on.  Whether or not he could stop anything by
that time is another question though (what I was wondering when I watched
it anyway)....and do what shinji was asking him to do.  Whatever it was, he
didn't even try.  And he wasn't upset, either.

(nevertheless I don't really _hate_ him.  but I'm not entering that
debate!!!)
