Just 'cos NERV CinC Gendou Ikari has a tendency to calmly interlock his
fingers in Life or Death situations, act like he's above everyone else,
indulge in favouritism, manipulation, exploitation, sadism and serious
neglect of others, it doesn't mean that all the MLers can shout "Damn your
eyes!!!" whenever he appears on screen. A while after I wrote to the ML
defending Gendou against the snarling hounds of morality, I realised that
he's
probably one of my favorite characters, if not my favorite. He's just so
deeeep
'n' moooody. And gnarly faced. And he's got a beard.

On 29.11.97 I wrote...

<EVA needs a character like this. When the periodical Angel is defeated, all
can't be well. (the series shows this.e.g. Shinji at school after the 3rd
Impact) but most of the characters in EVA are 'goodies' (loosely). Gendou is
a real dark horse within NERV and shows that this organisation isn't
mankind's saviour, but merely a collection of imperfect individuals,
striving to defeat the angels, who are threatening the world as they
percieve it. Gendou makes the perfect hate target for Shinji, etc, and the
viewer, as he does what he thinks is the best for the human race.>

IMHO, the worst thing I've seen him do so far in the series (A.D.Vision UK
have only released volume 5 - eps 9 &10 - over here in England) is in the
first episode, when NERV is trying to get shinji to pilot the EVA Unit-01...

Shinji : (having a nervous breakdown) "Why did you send for me?"
Gendou : (scornfully) "You know why I sent for you. Because I have a USE for
you."

I guess that Gendou Ikari is just what Calvin (of Calvin & Hobbes fame)
would call "A Big Picture Person."

And maybe Gendou's glasses keep on falling down his nose because he
accidentally spilt the blood of some small fluffy creature he was
slaughtering on his face. >8)

< A giant meteor/angel thing hits Tokyo 3, rendering Shinji, Rei, Asuka and
Touji unable to synch with their EVAs through some kind of spooky physic
power. While Gendou is toying with life itself in a genetics cloning lab, he
dicovers that Warm Water Penguins can be cloned to synch with an EVA. He
then gets lots of money off Kiel to manufacture SD penguin EVAs and so
Penpen and all his feathered friends have to fight off a new wave of
strangely cute Angels!

The kids'll love it! Anybody want to take me up on it? ;) >
