Section 0. Introduction.

0.0) Format of this document.

Each separate topic is marked with "x.y)" at the beginning. Square brackets
("[x.y]") marks a reference to another topic.

Some terms are listed in both romanized Japanese and English. In those
cases the Japanese terms comes first.

Japanese romanization mostly follows the Hepburn system. But I don't have a
reference to that so it might not be exact. Kanjis are marked by initial
caps and Katakanas are marked by all caps.

Japanese people's names are presented family name first. Thus, in the name
"Ikari Shinji" Ikari would be the family name.

Unit 0 kai color. After severe damage during
(EVA-00') events in ep.6, armor was
                completely rebuilt in blue color,
                added shoulder blades (for battle
                configration), and status was also
                upgraded from ProtoType to
TestType. EVA-00' has one eye *)

Evangelion Test type. Purple in color. Seems Ikari Shinji NERV
Unit 1 to have some mysterious
(EVA-01) characteristic lacking in the other
EVAs. Only EVA known to restart
                after total power failure, reason
                unknown. Also carries various other
                systems that Production Models
lack. EVA-01 has two eyes *)

Evangelion Red in color (same as the plug suit Soryu Asuka NERV
Unit 2 of its pilot). First production Langley
(EVA-02) model, built in Germany, but
                transported to Tokyo-3 at Gendou's
                request. EVA-02 has 4 eyes.

Evangelion Second Production Model, built in Not revealed NERV
Unit 3 the US. After EVA-04's accident US until ep.18.
(EVA-03) handed its control over to NERV
                Japan.

Evangelion Third Production Model, built in unknown / NERV
Unit 4 the US. During its test, EVA-04's unassigned
(EVA-04) S2 Engine, which was restored in
German and was installed in EVA-04
caused it to *sink* into the Sea of
                Dirac, taking everything within
                its 100mile radius; the cause
                unknown.

Evangelion Production model EVA units, built unknown SEELE
Unit 5-13 in various place of the world. Has
(EVA-05 - some design change from older EVAs.

1.4) The Angels.

If Unit One is credited with a kill, that means that it was not under
Shinji's control at the time. People who are credited with an assist,
that means they made significat progress toward defeating the angel.

Order Name Episode

The First Angel: Adam Intro, episode 12
    "The first human"

Misato sees mysterious illuminating figure, just before
Second Impact of year 2000, also rumoured that EVA series
are clone of First Angel; the silhoutte of the First Angel
appears to be like EVA-01. *)

The Second Angel: ??? Episode 21
(Unknown; some speculate that the mysterious wing like
    figure that apears during second impact is the second Angel;
another source places the Second Angel in the US as the
subject of research; as yet unproven.) *)

The Third Angel: Sachiel Episode 1
    "Angel of Water"

    "Angel of Fish"
Defeated by Shinji and Asuka, assisted by the UN Fleet.

The Seventh Angel: Israphel Episode 9
    "Angel of music"
    Defeated by Shinji and Asuka.

Computer Virus Angel, first discovered as contamination in
test body, it manages to hack itself into MAGI computer
core, in order to compel MAGI to set Self Destruct sequence.
It appears to be able to evolve exponentially. *)

The Twelfth Angel: Leriel Episode 16
    "Angel of Night"
    Defeated by Unit One.

It uses giant sphere like thing as decoy, when its target is

[The present day; current events as outlined 1-24]

[The 2015/6 Timeline Project] *)

Day a - Start of episode 1.
Day b - Start of episode 3.
Day c - Not used.
Day d - Start of episode 5.
Day e - Start of episode 7.
Day f - Episode 8, when the gang lands on the "Over the
                  Rainbow."

x - Used to indicate unknowness. x is undefined, even in
an expression. (x+x != 2*x (actually, the truth
                  value of this is undefined).
i[n] - The value of i[n] is an unknow constant. So,
		  i[1] == i[1] is always true.

Day a-1
Day d-22	- Rei's accident occurs.

Most probably, Rei's accident occurs one day before the
    start of the series.

Jun 6, 2015	- The earliest possible date for day a. Shinji turns
14 on this day, and Shinji is introduced in several
places as a fourteen year old.
                  ***find some places***

Day a. - Episode 1 occurs.
		- Episode 2 begins.

2a. Shinji seems to be out for a night, waking up the next day.
2b. On a+1, Gendou mentions that Rei will be able to pilot the
	evangelion again in 20 days.

Day a+1.	- Episode 2 ends.

Day a+9.	- The earliest possible date of day b. (see 3a.)

Day b. - Episode 3 begins.

3a. Misato claims that the angels gave them "only three weeks"
between attacks, this time. 9 days is the shortest one could
have and still claim to be "three weeks."

Day b. - Episode 3 ends.

Day a+13.	- The latest possible date of day b. (see 3a, 4a, 4b.)

Day b+5.	- Episode 4 begins.

4a. Misato claims that Shinji has missed 5 days of school. She
strongly implies that the events of episode 3 are the cause of
        this.
4b. Shinji sleeps overnight in Kensuke's tent. (Bringing us to day
        b+6).

Day b+6.	- Episode 4 ends.

Day a+20.
Day d+1.	- Episode 5 begins.

    5a. Rei's accident occured 22 days ago.
5b. One day passes before Rei's piloting test. (Shinji, Ritsuko,
and Misato eat, Ritsuko gives Shinji the card. It seems that
Shinji gives Rei the card the next day.) (This is d+1, or a+21)

Day a+21.
Day d+1.	- Episode 5 ends.
		- Episode 6 begins.

6a. Operation Yashima begins at midnight, meaning it occurs on
	day d+2 (a+22).

Day a+22.
Day d+2.	- Episode 6 ends.

Day e. - Episode 7 begins.

7a. On the first day, Misato visits Shinji's school.
7b. On the second day (e+1), Misato and Shinji stop the JA.
7c. On the third day (e+2), Misato and Shinji eat breakfast.

Day e+2.	- Episode 7 ends.

Day f-i[0]-1.	- Unit 02 leaves Sasebo port. (see 8a.)
Day f-i[0].	- Episode 8 begins.

8a. Gendou mentions Unit 02 leaving Sasebo "yesterday."
8b. When the convoy is less than one day out, the gang
        choppers onto it. (Day f.)

Day f. - Episode 8 ends.

Aug 5, 2015	- Episode 9 begins.

9a. Nerv predicts the next attack will occur "6 days
later." Since that's Aug 11, the first attack must be on
        Aug 5. (Derived from 9b.)
9b. Misato marks Aug 11, 2015 on the calender. Camera then
pans to Aug 8, which I assume to be the current day, and also
the day after the angel attack. (As a side note, the calender
they are using isn't correct for 2015. It's either 2017, or
        more likely 1995.)
9c. Aug 11 is the day that was marked, so I assume it the day
        of the second battle.

Aug 11, 2015	- Episode 9 ends.

[Events as portrayed by Death & Rebirth and End of Evangelion] *)

2016 (TV)

[The Human Complementation Project is executed]

1.6) Religious glossary

1.6.1) What is the tree-like image seen in the opening credits?

This is the Sephirotic System, devised by Athanasius Kirchner in 1653. A
German priest, he studied the Kabbalah, a tome of Jewish mysticism, and
created the diagram.

The Kabbalah appears to an influence in the conception of Evangelion.
Meaning "tradition" in Hebrew, the Kabbalah is claimed to be the word of
God, handed down to Adam and Moses, reveals the framework of God and
the Creation (the Sephirotic System.)

1.6.2) What are the Dead Sea Scrolls?

The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered by a shepherd in a cave in Israel,
about 1947. They appear to be the earliest records of Jewish scripture.
Not much more about the documents are known, as the Israeli government have
strict conditions as to who can view them, and where and when.

1.6.3) What does NERV mean?

"Nerv" is German for "nerve".

1.6.4) Where did the motto for NERV come from?

"God's in his Heaven, All's well with the world" is taken from a poem by
Robert Browning (1812-89), "Pippa Passes", Part 1 1.222.

1.6.5) What does "Seele" mean?

"Seele" is German for "soul"

1.6.6) What does "Gehirn" mean?

"Gehirn" is German for "brain" *)

1.6.7) Who are the Magi?

The Magi are the three kings from the East, who came to worship the baby
Jesus in Bethelem, following a star that pointed to the place where they
could find him. The names of the kings are Balthasar, Casper and
Melchior.

1.6.8) What is the Spear of Longinus? (was 5.6)

This is the spear that pierced the side of Christ at the Crucifixion,
the wound from which blood and water poured out. The name of the
soldier that wielded the spear was Longinus.

Like the Holy Grail, the Spear is fabled to wield magical powers, such
as the ability to grant victory to anyone who holds it. An Arthurian
legend tells about the quest of one of Arthur's knights to find the
Spear. It is said that Adolf Hitler was interested in the legend of the
Spear (which was held in a museum in Austria.)

1.6.9) Who is Adam, Eve and Lillith?

Adam (man) was the final creation of God, "in his image". Eve (woman)
was created to be a companion to Adam, from a piece of Adam's rib.
Lillith, according to Jewish folklore, was the first companion of Adam,
but would not obey him, and was exiled from the Garden of Eden ("East of
Eden"). She apparently became the wife of Cain (son of Adam, who killed
his brother, Abel), and gave birth to demons.

1.6.10) What is the seven eyed logo?

It is apparently the "seven eyes of God." It is the Seele logo?

1.6.11) What is Marduk?

Marduk is a Babylonian god. (Zorothastrian?)

Section 2. About EVA's production.

2.0) Gainax, the company that produced it. *)

Gainax was founded in December, 1984 by {names}. It produced The Wings of
Honneamise (film), Nadia of the Mysterious Seas/The secret of Blue Water
(TV), Over the top!/Gunbuster" (OAV), "Otaku No Video" (OAV) . {How did
these do in the marketplace?} It then took {how much time} off, and made
the Princess Maker series of games. Evangelion is their "returning to
anime" work.

2.1) The sponsors.

Sega Enterprise (the video/console game company) and Kadokawa Shoten
(publisher) sponsered the production of EVA. This is probably why the
EVA video games to date has only been published on the Sega Saturn
(although a Win95 game is in the works). Kadokawa publishes a monthly
anime magazine NewType that has quite a lot of EVA coverage, and it
also publishes the EVA manga and several EVA books.

2.2) Main Production Staff.

2.3) When was Evangelion first broadcast? *)

Evangelion began broadcast weekly on October 4, 1996, and concluded March
27, 1997. {TV Network} broadcast the series at {time}.

2.7) About the songs.

The capitalization may seem unconventional but I'm just trying to be
faithful to the way they are presented on the CD case.

2.7.0) How many versions of Zankoku na Tenshi no THESE are there?

At least 6:

   * Main version
   * Director's Edit. Version
   * TV. Size Version
   * Director's Edit. Version II
   * AYANAMI Version
   * Female cast (Misato, Rei, Asuka) Version *)

2.7.1) What does "TE-SE" mean, anyway?

The Japanese characters "TE-SE" translate to the German "these",
meaning "thesis" in English, according to JDIC, the electronic
Japanese dictionary.

2.7.2) Why are the endings different for each episode?

Ask Gainax.

2.7.3) How many different versions of "Fly me to the moon" are there?

There are at least 28 different ones on the CDs. (There are 29 in the
CD list, but I think one of CLAIRE's full sized version is
duplicated.) There may be some more in KIDA-114, but I don't have that
disc yet.

2.7.4) But there are only 26 TV episodes!

I suspect only the ones marked (TV. Size Version) are used on TV,
which makes only 16 versions below.

2.7.5) Can you tell me which version is used for which episode?

As far as I know, nobody has figured it out yet. The numbered Rei
versions (5, 6, 23, 25, 26) should correspond to the TV episode. Here
are some guesses:

              Episode Ending

2.7.8) What are the differences between Rei's versions?

At least, ANNO directed HAYASHIBARA Megumi to sing as Rei for #5, and
as "unified person of Rei and HAYASHIBARA Megumi" for #6.

2.8) Why are there two subtitles (Japanese and English) for each episode?

They were made that way. The English subtitle also serves as an
eye-catch and sometimes convey a change in focus for the second half
of the episode. It is interesting to note that the two subtitles are
not always direct translations of each other. It is also interesting
that only in ep.26 there are 2 cuts (versus 1 in the other episodes)
for the English subtitle.

2.9) Specific information about some episode's subtitles.

...
Episode 24
The two characters "si-Sya" in the Japanese subtitle is a visual pun
to Kaoru's last name, Nagisa. It is also a pun meaning both "Angel"
and "Casualty". In detail:

katakana "shi" looks very much like a "sanzui-hen" kanji radical
(which basically adds "water-related" meaning to the kanji). Composed
with the next kanji "sha" (person), they *look* like ONE kanji
"nagisa" (shore).

The English title, "Knockin' on Heaven's Door", is the title of a Bob Dylan
song, which was included in the film "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid".

2.10) Episode list {subtitles, TV air date, staff and ending information}.

Section 3. Details

3.0) What is the first impact?

According to the textbook with which Shinji and his classmates study
the history, the First Impact is the collision of a meteorite with the
Earth which caused the moon to be separated from the Earth.

3.1) What is the plug suit for?

It increases the pilot's synchronization with an EVA. The only
neccessary thing for a pilot to wear in order to pilot an EVA is the
hairclip-like thing on his/her hair. So we see the children pilot the
EVAs in their street clothes or school uniforms in several episodes.
In ep.?? we see them test-synchronizing nude.

3.2) Why has Gendou changed his last name?

Gendou married into his wife's family, taking up her family's name
instead of vice versa. This sometime happens in Japanese society and
especially if the wife's family is of a higher social standing than
the husband's.

3.3) What gender are the EVAs?

This is subject to debate. The gender of the EVAs are not made
explicit during the series. Ritsuko said (trying to avoid spoilers) a
line that contains the word "she" in ep.19, and a lot of people takes
this to mean that EVA-01 is female. However the rest of the time she,
and everybody else, refers to the EVAs as "EVA", so the line in
question is most likely refering to somebody else (who that is is
another spoiler). To further confuse matters, Kaoru also said a line
with "her" in ep.24, probably refering to EVA-02.

3.4) Are the characters named after Japanese Navy warships?

It appears so; names can be matched to World War II Imperial Japanese Navy
ships or classes of ships. Here is a list of names and the corresponding
ships or classes of ship:

Akagi Akagi Class Aircraft Carrier

Aoba Heavy Cruiser

Ayanami Fubuki Class Destroyer

Fuyutsuki Akizuki Class Destroyer

Hyuga Battleship

Ibuki Aircraft Carrier

Katsuragi Unryu Class Aircraft Carrier

Soryu Soryu Class Aircraft Carrier

In addition the following names are based on nautical terms: *)

Ikari Anchor

Kaji Rudder

Rokubungi Sextant

Keel The major piece of timber that forms the hull of a ship

Asuka's American surname is also named after a ship, from the US Navy: *)

Langley Aircraft Carrier (named after an aircraft pioneer, c. 1900)

These are the anime in book form, made from the anime cells with the
story description (and some of the dialog) on the side. They also
contains "Check points" which are backgrounds on the production or
storyline under each page, and usually an appendix or two with
character designs and such. Some of them are a bit brief, so they are
not very good replacements for the TV episodes. Still recommended for
easy lookup and the extra stuff. The 9 books contains all 26 TV
episodes. They are published by Kadokawa Shoten and is 590yen each.

Section 5. Spoilers

Each question is marked by the episode that it spoils. If you have
not watched up to that episode I strongely advice against reading the
spoiler. Part of the enjoyment of EVA is to watch the complex plot
unfold, and several people has expressed regret being spoiled some
major points in the plot (which below has).

5.0) What is the Instrumentality of Men project?

Gendou's main responsibility is said to be the Instrumentality of Men
project instead of the Evangelion project in ep.??. Incidentally, the
phrase "Instrumentality of Men" is attributed to Anno himself.

[Translation note: '"Instrumentality of Mankind"? Yes,
"Instrumentality of Mankind" was translated to "JinRui Hokan Kikou" in
Japanese.

'When Literal Translation Project started translating EVANGELION, I
translated "JinRui Hokan Keikaku" as "Instrumentality of Mankind
Project." Later, ANNO himself revealed it must be translated to
"Instrumentality of Man Project". (Well, sounds like
politically-incorrect... )'

- Takeuchi Shouichi]

5.1) Who is Yui, and what is her connection to EVA-01? (ep.21)

Ikari Yui is Shinji's mother. In ep.21 we learned she was a student
in the University where Fuyutsuki worked as a Professor. She was a
test pilot of EVA-01, and died while in an experiment involving it.
("As I wished," said Naoko, Ritsuko's mother and inventor of MAGI.) No
detail of the accident is told. However in ep.20 Ritsuko said she
didn't invent the pilot salvage process (concerning the 400% synchro
incident), that it was used 10 years ago but failed. Combine with the
fact that Shinji has lived away from Gendou for 10 years, there is a
strong hint that Yui was absorbed into EVA-01 much like what happened
to Shinji in ep.20.

There are other hints to this end; EVA-01 has moved several times by
itself, without external power, to protect Shinji. In the manga,
Shinji encounters an unknown female figure while unconcious in EVA-01.

5.2) What happened to Shinji when he was small? (ep.21)

He witnessed Yui's fatal accident, and "ran away" from NERV and his
father. Probably as a result of this and Yui's death, Rei is
recruited as a pilot. In the earlier episodes he has no recollection
of this. We were made to assume that Gendou abandoned him to work on
his project. Shinji finally remembers in ep.(20? 21?).

I don't think this justifies what Gendou does to his son, but that's a
different question.

5.3) What happened to Asuka's parents? (ep.22)

Her mother got into an accident while test piloting an EVA (EVA-02?)
and become insane. She thought a doll was Asuka and ignored the real
Asuka. She was shown to have "killed" the doll and then committed
suicide in ep.22, which Asuka discovered. As a result, Asuka hates
dolls and Rei, who she thinks is passive "like a doll".

Asuka's father remarried and her step mom gave her a call from Germany
in ep.22.

5.4) What is the big deal about Rei? (major spoiler ep.23, 24)

Rei is a clone, in the sense that there are multiple copies of her
body. Who she is cloned from is mystery, and she might even have been
artifically made in the beginning. She was said to process some
Angel-like characteristics: She has red eyes, and Kaoru said to her
"We are alike." in ep.24. It was hinted that she generated an
A.T.Field in ep.24. She was somehow connected with Yui: They look
alike, which Naoko noticed in ep.23, and Shinji commented "I feel she
is like (a) mother" in ep.?? and again "so, that feeling was right
afterall" in ep.23.

The only people who definitely knew, prior to ep.23, was Gendou,
Ritsuko, and Maya (hence her comment of dummy plugs being "inhumane"
in ep.??). Fuyutsuki probabaly knows also.

There is only 1 Rei in any given moment in the TV series. The rest of
the bodies are said (by Ritsuko in ep.23) to possess no "soul" and are
just "spare parts" to the dummy plugs and the real Rei. It seems that
it is possible to transfer her soul to another body in the event of
her death, which happened twice in the series.

The first Rei was killed (strangled) by Naoko. The incident was shown
in ep.21.

The second Rei sacrificed herself to save Shinji in ep.23.

5.5) Why is everybody talking about the last two episodes?
     (ep.25 & 26)

Mostly likely that it did not make a satisfying ending and it confused
many viewers. It did not give much of a conclusion just a lot of
philsophy.

Of course, some people liked 25 & 26.
