The colour part is wrong.

I thought there was a previous post that showed Gainax's original plan for
the series and there was some talk already about the moon playing a
important role? Didn't you read those posts? Maybe you don't read all the
posts...maybe *I* should stop reading *all* the posts... ...

Anyway, originally (IIRC) the moon played a more significant role in the
anime, something like the Angels coming from the moon. And since Rei may or
may not be an Angel, or cloned from an angel, or even half-Angel (see, no
spoilers), she was occasionally pictured with the moon to tease viewers.

Hmm, wondered if IIRC. I can't seem to remember who posted that info.
