Actually, did they? It was my uninformed impression that the ending of EoE 
was also in Shinji's mind.

## I don't think so. A large part of the movie just before the ending was
## spent in Shinji's mind. Perhaps the very ending was a merger of Shinji's
## mind and the external world? That's getting mystical....
## I still prefer to see the ending as the external world.
