Ahh.. Just like what manga artists back in the 50s and 60s had to do. 
With the exception of more established and famous artists like Tezuka
who could work full time on their works, most others had to take a part
time jobs to suppliment their pay as manga artists.
 If you're interested, I recommend a Japanese movie called "Manga
Apartments" which details the lives of manga artists(the guy who created
Doereamon was one of the artists potraited in it among others) back in
the 50s and 60s. Their conditions are probably aren't too different to
that of doujinshi artists these days.  The pay sucks, to make money you
had to churn out large amounts of pages and stories, and people in
general look down on you, you as a lofer who does nothing to contribute
to society.

By the way, just how are manga artists treated these days in Japan? A
whole lot better I would think considering the money some of them makes
and the populartiy of mangas in general there.
