Yes. But society hates those who realize this.

Shinji will become Kaoru. An interesting idea. It fits in with another
idea I've been pondering... Kaoru is a member of the last race to undergo
the instrumentality, perhaps unsuccessfully. Just before the end, they
began transmitting a signal. (This is where the MAGI come in, ask me to
explain later) 

Perhaps the second impact was ment to serve as some type of beacon to tell
them to send the message to earth.

This message is recieved by Keel Lorentz. He sees it as the way to
salvation, or to a higher plane. They claim it as a Dead Sea Scroll, just
to run interferance as to the true source. Gendou thinks the plan is
imperfect, that Kaoru's people failed.

And so the story begins.

Tom's random theory. Not perfect, not sure if I buy it myself.
