Well, I'd hate to burst everyone's bubbles here, but the original Japanese
episode says the following : 

"Souda... Saishou no NINGEN, Adamu (Adam) dayo"
Translation : "That's right... The first HUMAN, Adam". 

There you have it, folks... Clean and simple. So it is not mistranslation in
ADV's part (How about that!). 

BTW... To the original poster : It's episode 8, not 7.

Well, all arguements about what Adam (Eva version) is aside, this IS what the
original script says, whatever the intent was (not even going to touch the
subject, as I am pretty tired right now...).

Don't even go there... I'd hate to see this statement take a life of its own
