Neither do we, or the Japanese fans, for that matter. But I would like to know.

Gareth has supplied some information that states Shinji's famous "nigecha
dame da" (I mustn't run away) was Anno's own mantra when confronted with his
problem of alcoholism. 
Other hypotheses have been financial trouble (unlikely) and family problems
(given the nature of EVA's character relations, probable) among other things.

It's EVA topic (I think) but I'll have to disappoint you; to my knowledge, a
source like that does not exist. I'd love to see a Japanese essay book on
him, but no go...
