It's a counter.  The Japanese language uses counters to make things
plural.  Remember you don't say stuff like "enpitsus" (pencils) you'd say
ni-hon enpitsu (two pencils).  "Hon" is the counter.  "Enpitsu" is pencil.

My sister (from whom I acquired this information; after all I know
virtually no Japanese) believes that "goki" might be derived from the 
counter used for trains.  Remember that in Japanese, different objects
require different counters.  (Complicated, dontcha think?)
