When it first showed up, it looked like a giant ring, but when Unit-00 
showed up, it kinda looked like the hilt of the Longinus Lance.  In 
infected Unit-00 and got into Rei's mind, causing her to feel emotions 
for the first time in her life.  When Shinji showed up, it went after 
him, and he barely managed to hold it off.  In a final desparate move, 
Rei self-destructed Unit-00 to save him and kill the Angel.
