You don't need to argue it, Tom.  It is a fact in the series.  In ep. 23
Ritsuko says: "However the vessel which truly contains a soul is Rei.
Only she has a soul.  None of the other vessels have a soul." and "These
Rei-like things here do not have a soul.  Nothing but vessels."  In ep. 25
when the Reis are chatting, "No. you are a human whose false soul was made
by a man named Ikari Gendou." (This is in reference to Rei.)  From the RCB
entry on Rei: "Although the personalities of these 3 Rei are different
from each other, this is due to the environment.  Their soul is one and
the same. Also, it seems that this soul was somehow derived from Lilith. "
