I would guess the angels purpose was to free the way to adam. Just as
Sahaquiel (big blob of explosives) did, he tried to get rid or Nerv and
the eva's. Therefore leaving the way open for others to unite with adam.
Gendou says that the angels get smarter (Quote from Episode 1; Gendou:
In addition, it has gained intelligence. He is saying this to fuyutsuki
just after the angel destroys one of their camera's. I forget exactly
what he says in the dubbed version. I think it is something like "and
their getting smarter too") so that means that they would think of new
ways to unite with adam (something that would be better for the whole)
even if it meant death. Leliel was a smart and brave angel. Also, who
knows what he could have done after...... he may have sat there for a
long time but that was obviously just to destroy unit 01 and maybe
others who tried to save him and we never got to see his possible final
form (if that wasn't his final form)... who knows.
