I think in the rush to uncover secrets, we've all missed the obvious.
Eva is an anime, it is a story set in a fictional world and like all
stories it requires theatrics and dramatics to capture the attention of
the audience.
Maybe angels blow up because the storyteller felt it would look good for
that particular scene. Maybe the 2nd angel was an oversight that the
creative team never got around to fleshing out and of course the
infamous "mysterious plug suit" in eps 20.
I've always wondered what was the message that Anno was trying to put
across in the ending. Did he want fans to wake up to the real world
rather than immerse in a fictional one? or was it an ingenious mechanism
of storytelling?
For those who question the canon of Eva, look at it this way:
The FAQ, the RCB and such are the approved history texts of the Eva
universe but there are always different ways of interpreting facts.
Some may bend the facts towards their liking, some take it wholesale
while others twist them around to suit their own image of Eva reality.
It's not so different in the real world.
For most of us, Eva has taken on a life of it's own in our own
imaginations. It is shaped by what we see and what we hope to see.
Perhaps we are all not so different after all
