clear as mud!
I believe Shinji and Asuka both chose that world---that they both had
walls so high (protecting their true inner self from exposure), that
they couldn't accept tearing them down to 'join' with the rest of
humanity. You could argue that they created a world of codependance
(hell), or that they created a world in which they could work on
removing the walls (purgatory).
If hell is other people, at least now they only have one other to worry
about.
