Omar Lilas here again! Hearing all this fuss over the dubbed version, I
just had to jump in and add my two cents.

First thing I'd like to point out. A.D. Vision has NOT had a good
reputation for dubs. I myself have only seen a few ADV dub, but they
really weren't that good. For example, in the Gunsmith Cats dub, Minnie
May doesn't sound half as cute as she does in Japanese. And they made
Bill Collins sound like more of a dillweed than he actually was.

I also got a chance to compare the Burn Up W dob to the sub and I kinda
think I like the sub a lot better.

>From the reviews I've heard from a lot of other fellow otaku, a lot of
their other titles totally bite. For example, in the Devil Hunter Yohko
dub, I hear they made Yohko sound like a valley girl.

Probably the only exception is the Golden Boy dub, which is actually
funnier because the voices are so bad. ^_^

Now getting to the Evangelion dub. I really didn't like it that much.
Here's my impression on the dubbed voices for each character.

Shinji - They kinda made him sound like a dork.

Rei - An OK attempt, but NO ONE can even hope to top Hayashibara-san's
portrayl.

Asuka - I'll admit her German is better, but IMHO, she's a bit too whiny.

Misato - Her acting is pretty good, but they totally screwed up her
alcohol-fueled war cry.

Ritsuko - Hers is passable.

Fuyutsuki - More or less bearable.

Gendo - Not one of the better portrayls that I've seen. They kinda
overdid it with his yelling in a few parts.

Kaji - Again, not a very good portrayl. They made him out to be more of
a wise-ass than he is. For example, in "Asuka Strikes!", when Gendo
tells him that Kaji can escape by himself if he has to, in the dub, he
says "Well, of course I can." in sort of an "Yeah, whatever" sort of way,
while in the sub, he just says "I know" in more of an "I understand" sort
of fashion.

Toji - passable if not slightly below average

Kensuke - They made him to be more of a dork than they made Shinji!

Hikari - Pretty much average, but WHY did they have her humming "Fly me
to the Moon" in episode 18?!

Hyuga - passable

Aoba - passable

Maya - This is probably what annoyed me the most about the Eva dub! In
the sub version, Maya had such a cute voice! In the dub, she just sounds
like an average, middle-aged woman! And we all know she's in her early
20s! How dare they defile my darling Maya-chan!

All in all, the Evangelion dub is nowhere near the standards of the big
guys like Viz or Pioneer, at least it isn't as bad as some of the other
dubs I've seen, like the ones from Animeigo. Now THOSE were some of the
worst dub jobs I have ever seen! Especially Riding Bean! I have seen
some bad dubs in my day, but THAT one was a real stinkburger!!

Okay, I'm done ranting. Feel free to reply.

Signed,
Omar Lilas, who STILL thinks that the Evangelion fandub at last years
Anime Weekend Atlanta was way better.
