There is nothing inconsistant about that, but I will argue its verity. I
point to my earlier post. They are in the middle of a war--that in
itself is stressful. But Shinji is here in the middle of the thing,
being one of the only 3 people on Earth (known at that time) to be able
to use a giant biological robotto fight big aliens from outer space.
He's under a lot of stress--this is another event upon his psyche. It's
nessisary. It also shows that the humans are *not* united against the
Angels (more or less). It is an important episode. NGE itself has very
little filler; everything that happens happens for a reason. Sheesh,
with the small amount of time the show takes (compared to say, Sailer
Moon or Dragonball Z), they don't have space for filler (as opposed to
DBZ, which has obvious filler episodes). Jet Alone is necessary.
