I think that rather than defining sentience, one can go defining what is not.
For example, it is not sentience (to me) when a fly is put in a pot filled with
polystyrene balls and she tries to climb to the top, because if I turn upside
down the pot the fly heads towards the bottom, that is, instinctually in the
direction opposite to gravity, because that's where the exit is supposed to be.
