They were refered to the Essene in the EVA Original. That information was 
changed between production and airing.

Gainax could have kept Essene if they wanted to. Apparently, they didn't. 
While other aspects of the EVA Original are useful, like Touji's sister 
info, or the Keel line at the end of 24, the fact that ALL references to 
Essene were removed from the final product of EVA indicates that Gainax 
changed their mind.

They can do that.

Since the Essene references were overwritten, you can't use that SEELE is 
THE group that wrote the DSS.

Now, maybe this is like the lance naming controversy, and they named 
themselves after that group. MAYBE. But Gainax decided otherwise. And they 
probably were aware of the implications of changing Essene to Seele.

The even more original EVA (See Newtype 100%) was only superficially similar 
to EVA. The Geofront is destroyed. Something called Aluka awaits in the 
Promised Land. Everyone waits for Rei while the 12th Angel destroys the 
Americas.

Should I claim that the above is canon? No, I can't.

For all intents and purposes, the only relationship between Essene and Seele 
is DSS. And in the series, we never see any references to SEELE writing the 
scrolls. They use them, but never do they say that they wrote them. Thats 
just your theory. You can't use theories as facts.
