We don't know for sure. Asuka says that the ATField that has been protecting
her all the time is her mother's, but then again at that point she's already
mistaken the whole way, so it does not help to clear the matter.

No, it is not. As it is explained in episode 2, an ATField is a waveform
phenomenon. Wave fields can be "neutralized" by a matching field with the
same characteristics but opposed phase. This nulls the phase space and
practically evens, at a point in the wave form, the values above and below
the zero on the amplitude axis, therefore zeroing the energy difference and
producing a stable situation in which, though the field is still present, it
cannot have any effect other than balancing the opposing field. When trying
to pierce an ATField, the Evas would shift phase of theirs to oppose that of
the angel's, and have it give way (as well as theirs). OTOH, in the case of
the tenth angel, Tsahaquiel, the Evas do not shift their fields (except
probably Rei at one point of the battle) so they can counter the enormous
force of his attempt to blow Tokyo-3 by skyfalling.
