[EVA] Swimming time!

I noticed that in Evangelion, there is some strange significance to Rei and 
swimming..What could it be, I mean, they always like to show her with water.
Another swimming question. 
What was Ritsu swimming in the VERY first episode, when you first see her? It 
looks like Bakelite, but it can't be. What is it?
