[EVA][META] I just don't see it

I have tried to avoid participating in these discussions, but feel the
need to speak up.

>Depending on a person's POV, most of the messages posted on this ML
>"don't contribute any to the current conversation."

Which is exactly why Vice and many other 'old-timers' have decided to
leave or limit their participation in the ML. This has nothing to do
with "giving up hope" or other criticisms aimed at Vice and others who
have left. It just means that when you join an Eva ML to discuss Eva in
a (hopefully) intelligent manner but find that most of the messages
either don't have much to do with Eva or are repulsive, then what's the
point?

>Er, that's for the Admin to decide. We the people of ML don't really
>have any say in what's considered "overboard."

Yes we do, through the judicious use of association and ostracism.
If a person feels that things are going overboard or that the ML has
deteriorated beyond a certain acceptable threshold, they can "vote with
their feet", so to speak.
Again, regardless of what some people may say, this is not "giving up
hope" or "failing to uphold their part in the ML". It is merely a
conscious decision not to waste their time or offend their sensibilities
with something that doesn't meet their standards.

>As no apparent action has been taken against the poster of the comment,
>I don't really think the Admin classify this post as a breach of rules.

We don't know if the Admin has contacted the person privately.
I personally would classify it not only as a breach of rules, but also a
severe breach of (n)etiquette. Further, should these type of posts
continue, I will limit my participation in this ML or leave it outright.

>This hasn't happened. The only comment made in the direction of
>omitting material from discussions recently is your letter. The "party"
>that you speak for hasn't spoken up yet.

In objecting to the post in question, the person also spoke for me.

>I don't know if he was going out of the way to be offensive, but I
>doubt that it was his intention. Let's try to be nice and let the
>Admin decide, kay?

I also don't know if the person making the offensive post was "going out
of his/her way", but I do know that he/she frequently makes these or
other types of pointless posts. I expose myself to sanctions by openly
criticizing the Admin here for not taking stern action to address these
issues. However, while realizing that the Admin cannot monitor the ML 24
hours a day, these problems have been going on for too long, and if they
are not addressed then farewell to the ML from me, too.

If you really want to know just how far the ML has deteriorated, try
looking back through random sections of the archives and compare the
level of the discussion then with now -- even though in many cases the
same types of things are being discussed.
