Apart from Ritsuko's comments in EVA about Rei, on a more abstract note I
remember reading somewhere that demons are attracted to water. I came across
this actually while searching for information on Lilith. The source I found
it in linked water with Lilith who, as the mother of all demons, was
attracted to water and therefore fled to the Dead Sea after leaving Eden.
Pity I can't remember the resource I admit. Now while Rei isn't exactly a
demon considering the fact that Anno threw together a lot of bits and pieces
from various mythologies I think it's possible that there's some link there
somewhere.

Of course I could be completely wrong...
