    I have a theory about this. Ritsuko clearly stated that the armor on the Eva
are not used as just armor, but also as a binding to force the Eva to do the
pilot's bidding. It fits that if they were trying to control Adam they would put
the same sort of binding on him as on the Eva (his clones). This also has
signifigance with the theory that Adam is black in color. If he had armor on
then you can't see his skin. After all, Unit-01 has light brown skin and purple
armor.
