This however, leaves the case of the original Unit 00 unaccounted for.
Originally Unit 00 did not have the winglets yet it is supposed to be a
clone of Adam or something if I recall correctly.  Yet Unit 01 has the
winglets and is a clone of Lilith as opposed to Adam.  Your theory makes
partial sense though still.  If in fact the winglets are part of a
"controlling" system put on the eva then it could account for the
unpredictability of Unit 00 during synch tests.  This could have also been
implemented later as part of the refit to give the unit more stability in
its operating.  I could have some of the continuity on this out of place as
I haven't watched any of the series in a while so please feel free to
nitpick and correct me if I goofed the placement of the refit.  I do like
the idea of the winglets being a major part of the binding system but I
think the idea needs fleshed out a little bit more first.
