I was going to strongly disagree with this and write something like "the
shoulder armor exists simply as a means to hold the prog knife and dart
launcher," but when I thought about this, I realized that during both
occurances of Shigouki becoming "liberated," i.e., during the battle
with Zeruel after ingesting the S2 organ, and when it calls the Lance
back from the moon in EoE, that it does lose the shoulder armor. Who
knows? Maybe Shigouki is the oft-discussed second Angel? They just
patterned the Eva armor after what was already there. Besides, who says
that the GOL had to be Adam? Gendou was going to unite Adam and Lillith,
so who says that the SI wasn't caused by the same thing? Bear with me if
this rant goes all over the place: If the Adam embryo was Adam itself
(himself), then did Gendou bring it back with him the day before the SI,
or did they find it afterwards (seems unlikely, right?). So was Lillith
the Second Angel and the GOL? Did they salvage what remained of Lillith
in Antarctica and bring it back to Nerv? Probably not, as the Geo-Front
is the egg-cell of Lillith, she was probably always there. But I have
too much faith in the directorship of Anno to think that the
similarities between the GOL and Shigouki (shoulder armor, 'core,' and
two eyes) are mere coincidence. But in reality, the shoulder armor is
probably only practical for storage and in the case of Zerogouki, it
also houses its "jump jets." It appears to be easily removeable, as is
necessary to use the large shoulder cannon (Asuka uses to fire at the
15th Angel).
