[EVA] [Spoilers] Where oh where is the S2 engine...

I've read a lot of posts about this subject, and I personally believe
that the S2 and core are NOT one in the same. However, I do believe that
the logic of this debate is flawed as are many of Eva's accuracies (some
'facts' regarding the series and movies were changed along the way as
the producers tweaked the storyline. People tend to recite the RCB as
the ultimate source, and it is, but only after the fact, as the story
had been wrapped up. IMHO, the 'facts' could've gone in other directions
based on the series itself--kinda like a alternate reality...hmmm).
First, we know that by destroying the core, Shinji is able to defeat the
Fourth Angel (among others, but the Fourth is the most clear example).
The events that ensue would lead one to believe that the core is the S2
(at least, they lead me at the time...): the way Gendou is so pleased to
get such a good sample of the destroyed core, it seems as if this was
the breakthrough for the creation of an S2 organ that would be later
used in Eva Unit 04 (to disasterous effect). But, we later learn that
Unit 01 has a core (prior to obtaining the S2), and as is shown
particularly during Asuka's battle with the MPEs, destroying their core
(it appears she did this to at least one. Don't get me started on the
'flying torso' MP that miraculously gains legs again...) doesn't destroy
the S2. The core may very well house the soul, but apparently the S2 is
something different. Unit 01 doesn't gain the S2 by devouring Zeruel's
core (IMHO), but gains it in some other way. Also, perhaps not every Eva
has a core; I understand that there is a screen shot somewhere (possibly
from a Director's Cut) of Zerogouki's core, but we never saw Nigouki's,
even when it was eaten.
