Well, consider the end of TV 25.  Both TV 25 and movie 26' contain the
lines "Don't leave me!  Don't desert me!  Don't kill me!".  In EoE,
this is followed by Third Impact and "I wish everyone would just die!"
In TV 25, this is followed by:

Kaji: This is the what you wanted.
Asuka: Destruction... death... a return to nothing.

I think that final scene is Anno's last cynical comment.  He wants to
believe the answer is as easy as the TV series suggested, but it's
never quite that simple...
