As someone who has been there (depression), I must agree.  The TV ending is 
very uplifting, particularly after all that has gone before.  I would concur 
that, for me, the rest of the series _is_ priming you for the last two 
episodes.  Of course, I still like a lot of the ideas in the first part of 
the series, as animation rather than deep philosophy.

I, too, felt the lack of closure after the final episodes.  But watching them 
again, it came to me.  And they are very hopeful.  I only hope Director Anno 
gained something from doing them.  Despite the current debate raging about 
the place of the two endings, I'll reserve my judgement until I have seen 
EoE.  But I no longer need to see it to feel a sense of closure.
