Okay, here are my views on them.
>(1) Shinji is actually being punished. This mainly relies on the explicit
>lack of music at the end of the movie. The only thing you can hear is the
>waves hitting the shore. During the series, the only time Shinji was
>comfortable was when he was listening to his DAT player.
No. He's been comfy when complimented, when with Kaworu, hanging out with
Touji and Kensuke. He's had comfortable moments that don't revolve around
music. He just doesn't have many of them.
>I am assuming that he was listening to music (correct me if I am wrong . .
>. It has been a while since I saw the movie).
When? His SDAT died during the beginning of the film.
>Right before the scene there is music.
Right before this scene was a different scene. Different scenes use music
>There was music during most of the movie. I think the lack of music at this
>time is peculiar to say the least.
It fit the mood.
>It seems to me that if you were going to punish Shinji this would be a good
>way to do it.
So because he chose reality, he feels pain. True, but punishment is a tad
>Also you have the giant half head of Auska and the real Auska laying on the
Giant dead head of Rei.
>possibly these are there to remind Shinji of how he let her down.
Rei's head is there because Shinji killed Adam/Lillith.
>Misatos cross could serve the same purpose.
Misato gave Shinji the cross.
>Now what is he being punished for? An allegorical analysis
>of the movie wouldn't be far fetched. So possibly Shinji's crime was not
>acting to save EVA even though he could have.
Save EVA? From what?
>Maybe EVA is really a Christ figure.
> The EVA's on the crucifixes would certainly lead you to believe
>this. So Shinji's crime could actually an allegory for the people not
>preventing the crucifixion of Christ. The EVA's on the crucifix would stand
>as an eternal reminder of his crime.
Remember, EVA was made for an audience that is mostly Shinto/Buddhist.
Judeo/Christian imagery may make an appearance here and there, but themes
from Western religions don't play a major role in EVA.
>(2) The whole EVA series is really solipsism. Shinji is really the only
>person that exists.
Goes against the entire plot. The entire idea of EVA deals with the
relationships between others, and how the closer you get to people, the more
you get hurt. If no one else exists, you can't get hurt.
>When his EVA unit one comes out of NERV and goes nuts which basically
>results in the destruction of the world it is really Shinji accepting the
>fact that all of it is an illusion. So in his knowing that
>world doesn't exist it falls apart. Possibly Rei after the destruction is
>really the projection of who Descartes would call the "Mad Genius" who is
>responsible for the whole illusion. I think when Shinji is strangling Auska
>on the beach it is really a metaphor to show how Shinji is still struggling
>with the concept that none of them exist.
As I said, it goes against every bit of dialog within the film and series. A
nice idea, but it's not EVA. If Shinji was the only person around, then he
would basically be permanently in Instrumentality.
And the fact that others exist is flat out made true by the fact that Shinji
wants other AT fields to exist as well.
>I think the idea that EoE ends on a somewhat happy note is interesting. I
>think there are a lot of problems you have to deal with though. Like the
>Evangelions on the crucifixes. Where do they fit in?
The EVA series was turned to stone, and fell to Earth. Crucifixes are a very
useful way of holding people captive. ^-^
>Or the lack of music in the last scene? But it is definitely a possibility.
>There is also the possibility the Anno was really just throwing
>Instrumenatility into the movie in a way that the feeble minded who only
>care about robots battling each other wouldn't get what it really was.
Those sorts of people wouldn't see the movie, they'd be watching G Gundam at
