I have to say that I'm just as sure as Brendan that when Anno was directing
EOE he wasn't thinking "Now God's gonna have his way with them". More like,
well, the themes which are actually expressed in the dialogue and what happens
during HCP, which don't have anything to do with religion as far as I can see.

Kaworu and Yui's words point to hope still existing for people, and cast a hopeful
light on the ending. However, the entire mood of "I Need You" is what makes
it a unhappy ending. Doesn't matter how much hope there is for humanity, those
kids are skrewed up.
