Here's a way to think about it.
Warp Drive exists in Star Trek. You don't have to understand the details
behind Warp to enjoy the series. But the guys who make Star Trek have made a
series of Technical Manuals, which explain warp drive.
Because we've read the book, we can know things like how warp ten is
impossible to reach, or that
Now, people make discussions on the nature of warp drive. As such, reading
the material that explains the warp drive is practically mandatory if you
want to discuss it.
You can make your own interpretations if you want to, such as the fact that
warp drive is a creation of mental will, but everyone else is using the
official word, because it is correct.
You don't have to read the books to understand the series, but if you are
going to discuss it seriously, reading them is very much suggested.
Making the leap to EVA, the Red Cross Book gives us a certain amount of
information. Real world info about EVA, which are production notes,
explanation of the religious imagery for the audience which isn't
JudeoChristian, a glossary of the Technobabble e.g. "Bakelite". It also
includes some of the series aspects, such as Angels, Shinji, the Lance.
It goes off of what the series says. And it is official. You don't have to
read it, but it helps.
As for the commentary track, I'd be more interested in the Technical
commentary of how the movie was made, who thought up which part, what scenes
were favorites, than of cold facts about just why Asuka spoke in print.
Now, having facts to go off of doesn't mean that we can't make theories. It
means that we have limits on what our theories could be. I could say that
Kaji was a genetically altered Hitler clone, or that the EVAs are really
Gods trapped in a hard candy shell. And most people would say that those are
wrong, because they go against established facts.
Likewise, you couldn't say that Rei was a clone of Shinji made female,
because the RCB states that she is definitely a clone of Yui, made after her
absorption into the EVA.
Is that an okay explanation?
