It would be interesting to know if the core serves a distinct purpose
other than as receptacle for a soul. IIRC there is no direct mention of
other functions in the show/reference materials, but I could be wrong.

Also, I know you were just giving a possible example, but Rei and Kaworu
did not seem to need a core (at least not an Eva core) to regulate their
ATF in Ep.24...

Oh well, I guess the presence of a core in EVA-00 can just be taken to
mean that the unit is structurally/functionally the same as the other
units, and any possible difference would be in the pilot.
