I still hold the possibility open, given that a) I still feel EVA-00
needs a soul, b) Shinji synched up to the A^10 nerve connection before
the crossover test went haywire, and 3) Ritsuko's words of self-guilt
that EVA-00 (she?) had wanted to hit her instead of Rei.

Actually, I don't think this affects the soul transfer/patterning
theory, but it can be proven that the next Rei to receive Lilith's soul
and become active is predetermined.
This is the answer to one of the trivia questions I posted at the
beginning of the month, but I will give the answer anyway.

If you look closely at the handheld terminal that Ritsuko is holding
during the Reiquarium scene (Ep.21), you will see the charaters "REI
004" to "REI 014" listed on the screen. This means that:
1- Ritsuko destroyed at least 11 Rei clones, and
2- The Rei clones are numbered -- in other words, the order in which
they are scheduled to appear (receive Lilith's soul) is predetermined.
