I believe the jacket info on the LD version describes Shinji's smile at the end
as "the smile of the complemented". This of course means nothing if you don't
take that to be complemented means to have accepted the false world. I don't
take it. I believe one undergoes the complementation and therefore, by being
faced with oneself and the others, is made able to take a decision that will or
will not entail accepting the false world.
 Whatever reasoning could be put up to support that Shinji decided to lie to
himself, will always seem to me a completely idiot thing on Anno's side to just
go against all of the meaning he's been propping until then to all of Eva to
kick it at the last moment. Wouldn't make sense.
