 Report from Otakon...Eva Panel

previously posted by moi in another board....taken (legally, as far as I
know) from the Otakon panel with assistant director Tsurumaki, director of
Air, director of FLCL.

Did anyone other than me go to the Eva panel saturday afternoon at Otakon?
Tsurumaki, Assistant Director of the Eva series and director of FLCL and
Kare Kano spoke...he answered two questions of mine I felt were really
important.
#1. If the violence in EoE was a result of anno's bitterness towards
negative fan reactions to the tv series ending?
(answer: no, it wasn't out of bitterness. most anime in japan end lightly
and happily, and they were out to make something different than that,
something more realistic i suppose)

#2. Why were the Director's Cuts made and how important are they to the
story?

(answer: they aren't that important to the story, they were made as an
apology to fans for delaying the release of the video so long. And also to
help understand the later episodes, which he admitted were made quickly and
roughly).

Also, when planning evangelion, the staff would just bounce ideas around,
often at restuarants, and Anno wouldn't say much, but of course get the
last word.

He said his favorite Kare kano character was Tsubasa. He also said that
Anno didn't give up directing rights to Death and Air because he was tired
of Eva...he remained supervising director on all movies and of course
directed my pure heart for you.

He mentioned that Anno was working on Nadia when the Eva oppurtunity arose,
and that he took the job because he thought he could change. Tsurumaki
compared this to Shinji being summoned by his father to control
Eva...another parallel of staff and fiction!

I think this will probably be moved to Anime...oh well. Seeing and talking
to Tsurumaki was an amazing experience, and I learned that we fans
definetely overspeculate on the show! I got the distinct impression that
all was not so continually dire as I thought.

enjoy the info!

I wanted quickly to add that Tsurumaki had a translator...a minor detail.
She was a good translator, I thought. And also, that I didn't bring a tape
recorder, I took notes. I tried to keep the intent of his every statement.
Believe me, I took this religiously.
